Affinities (SoW1)

Affinities in Symphony of War have an additional effect on current stats and their development when the unit gains levels. This also depend on the type of unit. Every unit starts with one of the six affinities and this can only be changed by affinity tomes. The six affinities have different effects on the following stats:

  • Maximum health
  • Strength
  • Magic
  • Skill
  • Leadership; and
  • Loyalty development

They will appear in the game as scrolls which are consumed upon use. They are available inside chests, they are sold at the marketplace, can be gained as loot from the Arena or as drops when an enemy squad is vanquished.

Affinity effects

In the table below, there is a summarisation of all effects an affinity has on the unit.

Dark Neutral ++ ++ Neutral -- -- Every unit with this trait, has a terrible growth path for a leadership role, but they can become powerful squad units instead. Units have the same amount of hp as the lightning affinity, thus perhaps a penalty to hp as well.
Earth ++ Neutral Neutral -- Neutral Neutral In-game description is only -1, but the skill decrease is factual lower when giving that unit water affinity. The unit will gain skill when changed from earth to water affinity. It's good affinity for high hp characters with no malus/bonus to strength.
Fire Neutral + -- Neutral Neutral + In-game description of magic -1 could be incorrect. Changing the affinity from fire to dark, factually doubles the magic stat. Changing the affinity to magic neutral one, such light, lightning or earth, increase the amount by 30%. Water increases it by 70%. It's good fit for fighters, who can work with less skill, thus a slightly lesser fit for light infantry.
Light Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral ++ ++ Basically, the best affinity for leaders and creating loyal units. Can also be preferred for allround units. After gaining maximum loyalty, one can opt for switching affinity.
Lightning - + Neutral + Neutral - Good fit for light infantry and most fighters. It can also be a good fit for allround units.
Water + - + - Neutral Neutral Good affinity for support-units and mages. For tanks it can also be used to gain more magic and skill, but at the expense of strength and hp.

The effects per plus or minus differ per statistic. For most statistics, it's about 10%, while for magic, it's about 20%. For strength and skill, the effect is about 15%.
