Strategy
Tactics
Drakelings can fire up and down walls, with their solid HP making them good at besieging fortified enemy positions.
They're also one of the better sources of magic damage in the early game, when the frailty of magician units can make them much harder to fit into squads.
Still: it's worth noting most of a Dragon's bulk comes from HP, so they tend to be really strong for 1 fight but quickly loose stamina.
They also more directly loose stamina as a magic unit; as all magic units suffer a stacking debuff to their magic for each consecutive fight they enter into during enemy phase.
Overall: this doesn't prevent dragons from being reliable off-tanks that can tank, kill, respond to, and clean up a variety of situations: but they need to pace themselves.
Squads
Draconic units require more help from Healers than any other ~front-line units, as their bulk is predominantly derived from a high HP score: but a comparatively low armor stat. As such; most dragons really appreciate their own dedicated healer.
As Opponents:
Aggressive Attack is one of the best go-to options for most physical squads, enabling meaty hits that can quickly chunk through dragon's large health pools.
Otherwise: Acolytes and their
Magic Armor are a strong option to bait in and tank young dragons.
Builds
Traits
Healing Attuned and
Unscathed are solid go-to options to allow dragons to quickly bounce back from loosing big chunks of their HP, or prevent a lot of big hits from happening in the first place.
Overpower Can make excellent use of their Strength stat: especially once they promote and get
Colossal, enabling them to rapidly tank enemy
Morale.
Arcane Might is also a strong option to put their good Magic stat to maximum use.
Artifacts
Donari Armor is one of the best stat-bumps early game, as the combination of
15 HP,
4 Def, and
4 Mag are all things a young dragon appreciates: and any healers backing them up.
Flame Saber and
Aldor's Tower Shield are also potent options throughout the rest of the early game; though Drakeling's capacity to put every stat to use makes several items a solid option for them.
Typically this does mean they heavily favor +stat items, and suffer the most potential by running +effects/utility items in their place.
Affinity
Dark is the strongest overall option for Dragons, were the high STR and MAG combined, on units that put both to use, is a satisfying way to spoil a rare and powerful unit type.
Otherwise: the most common affinity in Earth is one of their best fallback options, making the most of their HP (and without suffering any Str or Mag penalties).
For promoting:
Lightning is a strong option for becoming a
Blue Dragon
And counter-intuitively:
Water is one of the strongest options for the firy
Red Dragons
Fire is one of the strongest for the icy
Silver Dragons.
(Though Dark is still the strongest option for both
Red Dragons and
Silver Dragons)
Gallery
The Drakeling's combat sprite is fairly noteworthy in that it has no team-color changes, looking the same regardless of being under player, allied, or enemy control.
The Drakeling is also one of very few units without a squad-leader icon: given Medic, Fighter, Bowman, and Militia are all possible as squad leaders by making a tier 2 unit a leader, then demoting them to tier 1.
