The Samurai is a Melee tier 3 infantry unit in Symphony of War. It upgrades from: Spearman and Archers. As the archer is tier 1 unit upgrade for both the Militia and the Bowman, there are basically three routes of development. By starting with a militia, you can have an unit with high skill, comparable levels of strength and magic, at the expense of HP. The archer and spearman route from bowman and swordman, delivery comparable results, but more hp, but less skill. Most units will meet the strength requirement between level 20-26 for upgrading without consumables.

As the Samurai is a multi-purpose heavy infantry, its capable of shooting arrows in ranged combat and attacking with polearms in melee. Of the heavy infantry units, it has the highest skill. Having the Polearm Warrior trait makes them good defensive and offensive units against enemy Cavalry. They also attack during the Light Infantry phase of combat, separate to other Heavy Infantry, meaning they do well mixed in with other Heavy Infantry.

Being able to shoot arrows, they can be used as a front-line defense on archer squads, capable of taking a hit if an enemy squad manages to target them.

Traits

As the unit is versatile, there are many traits for them:

  • Traits like Resolve, Unscathed, and Bodyguard are great to improve the defenses of the Samurai. Warrior's Hubris is also very useful for counteracting their main weakness against magic damage.
  • Challenger, Concentration and Cold-Blooded are good to improve their offense.
  • As a specialised unit, it can be given the traits of Dragonslayer and Smite, in order to make the unit an anti-magic and anti-assassin unit.
  • Lithe Assault and Precision should improve overall damage, especially against more heavily armored units. Another combination is Lithe Assault and Assassin's Heart, increasing critical damage and critical hit chance.
  • Overpower is also a good option as it can increase the morale damage done with attacks, allowing for easier Forced Surrender. Combined with Disarm, it can be used to lower enemy damage being dealt.
