The Ranger is a Melee tier 3 infantry unit in Symphony of War. While sharing the same armor rating as a Swordmaster, the ranger is in general, the tougher unit, due to having more hp. As such, its considered the best light infantry tank unit out there. Regarding damage, they do in overall less damage. That being said, their crossbow attack can hit any unit in the enemy formation, possibly outright killing some softer units with a critical hit and heavy units are still vulnerable to that attack as well.
Since they don't require any resources at all and have relatively low SKL requirement, they can be very useful in the early-mid game to fill up army positions with Tier 3 troops.
Regarding traits, there are the following options:
- Useful traits will enhance their critical chances and damage, such as Lithe Assault, Assassin's Heart, and Precision.
- As a specialised unit, it can be given the traits of Dragonslayer and Smite, in order to make the unit an anti-magic and anti-assassin unit.
- Concentration and Cold-Blooded can be used to increase overall damage output, but the first removes critical attacks and the latter only works on already damage units. Thus the effect is likely to be wasted on the first turn on fresh squads.
- Warrior's Hubris is also very useful for counteracting their main weakness against magic damage. This can be combined with a Water Affinity, though this hurts their skill.
- Traits like Resolve, Unscathed, Bodyguard and Pacifist are great to improve the defenses.

- Special actions: Crossbow attack bypasses enemy Block and Cover. Increased evasion in woods, townscape, hills, and swamp.
